Things to Do in Clifton Village: A Full Day Out Starting and Ending at The Albion

Clifton Village is one of those places that rewards a full day. Not a quick visit, not a single stop, but a proper day out that takes in everything this corner of Bristol has to offer, from the open expanse of the Downs in the morning to a table by the fire at The Albion in the evening.

Whether you are visiting Bristol for the first time or you have lived here for years and somehow never given Clifton the afternoon it deserves, here is how to do it properly.

Morning: Start on the Downs

The Clifton and Durdham Downs stretch out across 400 acres of open grassland above the Avon Gorge. There is no better way to begin a day in Clifton than with a walk here while the morning is still fresh.

The Downs are free, open and genuinely beautiful. Take the path that runs along the gorge edge for views across to Leigh Woods and the river below. In spring and summer it is one of the finest walks in Bristol. In winter, with the mist over the gorge and the city quiet, it is something else entirely.

Allow an hour, or two if the morning is good enough to justify it.

Mid-Morning: The Clifton Suspension Bridge

From the Downs, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a short stroll away and completely unmissable. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1864, it is one of the most recognisable landmarks in England and worth crossing on foot for the views down into the Avon Gorge.

The bridge has a visitor centre on the Leigh Woods side with exhibits on its history and construction. Allow 30 to 45 minutes here, more if you want to take your time with the views.

And when you are done, the best pub near the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a ten-minute walk away on Boyces Avenue.

Lunch: The Albion, Boyces Avenue

This is where the day finds its anchor. Among all the places to eat in Clifton Village, Bristol, The Albion on Boyces Avenue is the one that has been doing it longest, doing it best and doing it with the most character.

Established in 1761 and Grade II listed, The Albion is a former coaching inn that has been at the heart of Clifton Village life for over 260 years. The ground-floor bar with its wood-burning fires and warm lighting is exactly what you want after a morning on the Downs. The upstairs dining room is beautifully appointed for those who want something more considered.

What to order at lunch:

  • The weekday set menu offers two courses for £25 or three for £28, served Monday to Friday from midday until 5pm.
  • On Sundays, the five-star award-winning Sunday Roast is the only answer. Served from 11:30 AM. Booking is essential.
  • The bar menu offers small plates and sharing boards if you want something lighter before the afternoon continues.

Take your time here. The Albion is not a pub you rush.

Afternoon: The Village Streets

Clifton Village’s boutiques, cafes, and independent shops are clustered around The Mall and the surrounding streets, all within easy walking distance of Boyces Avenue.

A few things worth exploring:

  • The Mall. Clifton’s main village street, lined with independent shops, delis and boutiques worth browsing.
  • Princess Victoria Street. A charming side street with a mix of independent retailers and places to pick up something worth taking home.
  • Clifton Arcade. A beautiful Victorian arcade on Boyces Avenue with a range of independent traders inside.
  • The Observatory. A short walk from the bridge, the Clifton Observatory sits above the gorge and offers one of the finest views in Bristol. The camera obscura inside is a genuinely surprising thing to find on a hillside.

Allow two hours for the afternoon, more if the shops are good.

Evening: Back to The Albion

The natural end to a day in Clifton is where the best days in Clifton always end. Back on Boyces Avenue, back at The Albion, this time for the evening menu or a drink at the bar.

The evening menu is modern British cooking at its most considered. Seasonal dishes, cuts from the grill and Albion signatures that regulars return for time and again. The fires will be lit, the lighting will be warm and the bar will be exactly what a day well spent deserves at the end of it.

A day in Clifton, done properly. Start on the Downs, cross the bridge, lunch at The Albion, explore the village and come back for the evening.
